People have been asking a lot recently, “Does anyone still use Flickr?” Apparently, at least one person does: Martin Parr. It seems that not only does he have a (private) Flickr account, but he also keeps up with forum discussions.
Case in point: The Hard Core Street Photography group has a discussion going about the 100 most influential photographers of all time. As the discussion turned to staged vs. spontaneous shooting, one participant mentioned Parr’s “Last Resort” series, claiming that many of the images were posed.
Surprisingly, Parr himself responded to the claim:
“I just stumbled across this [discussion] and can categorically state that no shots from The Last Resort were staged or posed. In the case of the woman looking at the camera, she did suddenly turn round to look at me, and it worked. Most times as you HCSP crew know, people looking at the camera is a disaster, unless it is a portrait. But then that’s the magic of photography it can really throw you, just when you think you know all the rules.”
I’m not sure how you’d verify the account or posting as Parr’s, but it’s pretty interesting if you can suspend your disbelief. Click to view the discussion. He’s stopped by HCSP a few times over the years…

Holiday photo idea: Recreate an old photograph. Get inspiration at Young Me/Now Me & Back to the Future.
Going home for the holidays might mean you’ll be near the places and people you grew up with, so take the opportunity to recreate an old photo!
This was part of the Copenhagen Photo Festival. That I didn’t go to. At all. I kinda wanted to, but for some reason I found the whole thing a little confusing and hard to figure out. Maybe that was just me.

updating my website - some thoughts
My current website has more photos than any other pro site I have ever come across. I have always felt a little uncertain of how to go about organizing my work. I suppose part of the reason might be that a lot of the stuff I do is based on intuition.
For a long time I have been wanting to start using Tumblr.. and it occured to me that Tumblr might be a good place to get other peoples suggestions, thoughts and ideas on new ways of organizing photos and website presentations.
I want to make my website a lot simpler, and featuring a lot less images. More like Ben Roberts, Sacha Maric, David Bram and Alec Soth’s websites.
Most of the work I earn money from at present is related to portraiture. I photograph artists, musicians, actors, writers - but I also do a lot of child photography. I like the dialogue, working closely and intimately with people.. the result is always surprising, unpredictable. I also like it because it allows me to be creative and experiment.
I also do personal stuff, which I make absolutely no money from, but which is important to me nonetheless. Currently my site is divided into a commercial part, and a personal part. I was thinking of mixing it up more. Sort of like Sacha has done. I like how the images work together, showing diversity, while at the same time giving us a clear idea about who Sacha is as a photographer.
I’m new here…
I don’t really know how this works… But so far it reminds me of wordpress.
I hope you experienced Tumblr’ers will help and guide me ;)
